ABSTRACT

Biometric technology has transformed human biological characteristics into a new form of privacy, and the misuse of this technology poses challenges to protecting this new privacy. This article initially defines biometric technology and biometric characteristics, further demonstrating why biometric characteristics belong to personal privacy and how biometric technology poses challenges to its protection. Through analysis, this article argues that the essence of these challenges is the conflicts between the ethical principle of privacy protection and the ethical principle of maximizing social benefits. In order to address these challenges, it is necessary first to weigh the fundamental ethical principles. The two basic principles of privacy protection and maximizing social benefits are not mutual antagonism but hierarchy, and this hierarchy should be based on the principle of practical feasibility. That is, applying biometric technology should first meet the principle of practical feasibility and, on this premise, realize the principle of maximizing social benefits based on not infringing on the principle of privacy protection.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Growth and development are biological phenomenons involving cell mass increase and differentiation of form or function, respectively. For diagnostic purposes, the benefits of ultrasound are used for the biometric evolution of fetal growth. Objective: To determine fetal biometric measurements mostly associated with fetal growth restriction in infants who suffered intrauterine growth restriction. Methods: A descriptive and retrospective longitudinal study was carried out with pregnant women from two health areas of Santa Clara Municipality, who finished their pregnancy between September 2013 and October 2018 and whose newborns experienced growth restriction. The sample was classified at birth into small and adequate, according to trophic condition; and, in each group, the relationship with percentile values of biometric variables in the last two trimesters was studied. Results: Values below the tenth percentile predominated in all biometrics and in the two trimesters. In all infants and during the whole fetal period, abdominal circumference was below the tenth percentile. In the variables femur length and cephalic circumference, the highest percentiles were found in the third trimester; while, from the second trimester on, the same occurred in the variable biparietal diameter, possibly related to asymmetric growth restrictions. Conclusions: The biometric variable abdominal circumference is, from the second trimester on, reliable in the detection of intrauterine growth restrictions; its existence below the tenth percentile should serve as certainty of its existence, even when the trophic condition of the newborn seems to reveal another reality(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract The work aimed to evaluate the weight-length relationship and the condition factor, characterizing the biometry, anatomy, histology and volumetric density of the liver of Brycon amazonicus, in different stages of body growth. The experiment used twenty specimens in four stages of body growth (PI, PII, PIII and PIV) harvested every 90 days, containing five specimens, each group. The livers were dissected, weighed (g) and processed routinely using the hematoxylin and eosin technique. The data were submitted to analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation test and linear regression. The equation that represented the weight-length relation was W = 0.05902 x L2.63, with negative allometric growth, but with a relative condition factor equal to 1.0. The liver was divided into three lobes with the gallbladder close to the right lobe and its color varied from light red to dark red, not varying in relation to other fish species. The hepatosomatic relationship followed body growth until the PII group stage and then declined, demonstrating the behavior of its development in Brycon amazonicus. The organ consists predominantly of hepatocytes, followed by sinusoidal vessels and capillaries, with histological morphology similar to that of many species of fish. Melanomacrophage centers were found only in the most developed animals, but in small quantities, prompting the development of new research on this cell, in this species. In this way, research of this nature allows the characterization of fish species, helping to improve breeding methods, understanding pathological processes caused by diseases, and obtaining better productive capacity, serving an increasingly demanding and prosperous market.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The present study describes the haematological profile, feeding preference, and comparison of morphometric characters of blue rock pigeon (Columba livia) breeding pairs. For this purpose, 25 pairs (25 samples per sex) were sampled through Mist nets from district Okara and Bahawalnagar, Punjab, Pakistan. Birds were then anaesthetized with a combination of ketamine HCL (10 mg/kg) and diazepam (0.2 mg/kg) and subjected to morphometric measurements. 5µL blood also was taken from the jugular vein of each anaesthetized bird for haematological analysis. Few pairs were also dissected to remove gastrointestinal tracts (GITs) for food preferences. Results revealed that there are no significant differences in the haematological parameters and feeding preference of breeding pairs of Columba livia. The gut analysis further revealed, the major portion of gut contents consisted of pea and corn in most of the pairs. Regarding the mensural measurements, significant differences were recorded in the body weight, length of the longest primary feather, and chest circumference, whereas the rest of the studied parameters remain nonsignificant between sexes. So, it is concluded that apart from 3 morphometric parameters (body weight, length of longest primary feather and chest circumference), both sexes are alike in term of morphometry, haematology and food preference.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT In this project we investigated the changes of femoral development and growth of female New Zealand rabbits (NZr). Animals were maintained in individual cages since they were two weeks old with food and water ad libitum, and were sacrificed monthly consecutively: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Radiological studies were made with femoral pieces to determine femoral neck angle (fnA), total length (L), total bone mineral density (tBMD), bone center mineral density (bcBMD) and femoral metaphysis bone mineral density (fmBMD). We analyzed intergroup variations with Wilcoxon test and Bonferroni correction. We also performed histologic studies with femoral pieces. The fnA analyzes showed a significant increase in the first month while L stabilized since the fourth month. tBMD showed a plateu since the fourth month, even though bcBMD and fmBMD did not show any significant changes since the third month. In histology it was observed the absence of all typical growth cartilage zones since the fourth month, with the only presence of small remaining cartilage cells. In the fifth month we observed complete absence of cartilage, and presence of osteoid tissue only. The integrated interpretation of the results allows us to affirm that since the fourth month of development the femur of NZr acquires characteristics compatible with the adulthood.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Morphometrics analysis is an efficient and low-cost technique used in studies of sexual dimorphism in turtles. Kinosternon scorpioides scorpioides, scorpion mud turtle, has a wide phenotypic variation, depending on the area of its occurrence. Objective: The objective of this work was to identify the anatomical sexual difference of K. s. scorpioides, adults and hatchlings, through morphometric analysis; and relate the weights of adult animals to environmental factors (temperature and rainfall) in Marajó Island, Brazil. Methods: The sample collection was carried out from March to September 2018, covering both the rainy season (January to July) and the dry season (August to December). For the biometric analysis, 95 adults and 21 hatchlings were used, in which the length and width of the carapace and plastron, height of the shell, and weight were measured (adults only). For the geometric morphometry analysis, 21 adults and 13 hatchlings were used, in which 27 coordinates of anatomical landmarks were inserted in each image of the carapace and 11 in the plastron. Hatchlings were sexed by histology which was enabled by the identification of the ovaries and testicles. Results: The results showed the existence of dimorphism in adults. The plastron and height were higher in females, which had a more rounded carapace than males. This characteristic may be related to the species' sexual strategy, where males impose copulation. Histologically, it was possible to identify the ovaries and testicles in the hatchlings, but there was no anatomical sexual difference, despite the tendency to differentiate in the analysis of carapace PCA. Conclusions: Sexual dimorphism in K. s. scorpioides may play an important role on its reproductive behavior, which is synchronized with environmental events. This fact suggests that the reproductive strategies of this species would be severely affected by changes in the ecosystem.

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to study the reproduction of the Amazon turtle (Podocnemis expansa) through the evaluation of the reproductive parameters of adult females. This study was carried out in the Crixás-Açu River, municipality of Mundo Novo, state of Goiás, Brazil. In September, the biometrics of 20 females were evaluated during the spawning period. Their nests were marked for subsequent evaluation of hatchlings, measuring the distances of each nest to the river and vegetation. The second stage consisted of the evaluation of hatchlings and characterization of nests after egg hatching. The datawere tested using the Pearson Correlation to measure the degree of linear correlation between the variables analyzed, such as the parameters of females, hatchlings, nests, and eggs. Nest depth was positively correlated with the number of eggshells found. We also found a correlation between the number of eggsshells and the distance of nests to the vegetation. Although moderate, this result indicates that as the distance to the vegetation increases, the number of eggshells found in nests decreases. The spawning site for Amazon turtle breeding is crucial to determine a higher number of eggshatching and better development of hatchlings. However, the literature is still very scarce regarding the choice of spawning grounds and the influence that vegetation may have on the development of freshwater turtle hatchlingsin Brazil.

ABSTRACT

Anesthesia reduces the handling process duration and prevent fish injuries. The anesthetic effect and ideal concentrations of eugenol and tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222) were tested for pearl cichlid (Geophagus brasiliensis) juveniles with an average weight of 4.4 g in water at 24ºC. The criterion for determining the optimal dose considered an induction time of one minute. Experiment 1 tested the concentrations of 25, 75, 150 and 300 mg L-1 of eugenol. The best results were obtained at doses of 150 and 300 mg L-1. Experiment 2 aimed to establish a more accurate result by testing the concentrations of 180, 210, 240 and 270 mg L-1, and led to an estimation of 217 mg L-1 of eugenol to induce anesthesia in one minute. Experiment 3 evaluated 200, 300, 400, 500 and 600 mg L-1 of tricaine, of which the concentration of 294 mg L-1 was estimated to induce anesthesia in one minute. No significant differences were observed for recovery times when using either of the anesthetics. No mortality was observed within 24 hours after the experiments for any concentration of the anesthetics. The present study recommends 217 mg L-1 of eugenol or 394 mg L-1 of tricaine for anesthesia of the pearl cichlid.

ABSTRACT

@#AIM: To compare the detection rate of axial length(AL)in cataract eyes by Tomey OA-2000 and IOL Master 500, and to evaluate the repeatability of OA-2000 in measuring ocular biometrics parameters. <p>METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 270 cataract eyes was implemented in the ophthalmic outpatient department from July to September 2018. Ocular biometric measurements including AL, keratometry readings(K), anterior chamber depth(ACD), lens thickness(LT), central corneal thickness(CCT), pupil diameter(PD)and white to white(WTW)were performed using OA-2000 and IOL Master 500. The detection rates of AL were calculated and compared between the two devices. <p>RESULTS: AL detection rates of 86.3%(233/270)and 97.0%(262/270)were found by IOL Master 500 and OA-2000 respectively. The mean difference in the measured AL by the two devices was(0.007±0.129)mm, and the 95% limits of agreement(95%<i>LoA</i>)of AL was 0.01(-0.24 to 0.26)mm. OA-2000 demonstrated good repeatability in measuring AL, ACD, K(2.5mm and 3mm pupil diameter), LT and CCT, but not in measuring PD and WTW. <p>CONCLUSION: Both OA-2000 and IOL Master 500 showed good agreement in AL measurement in cataract patients. However, compared with IOL Master 500, OA-2000 has a higher detection rate of AL. OA-2000 not only demonstrates excellent repeatability in ocular biometric measurements including AL, ACD, K, LT and CCT, but also more advantageous for the AL measurement of cataract with heavy lens opacity and subcapsular opacity.

ABSTRACT

It is applied either for verification or for identification of an individual's identity and technically constitutes a problem of pattern recognition. In Chile, the existing legal framework regarding the handling of personal data does not include specific biometrics in its regulation. A new bill that considers both biometric data and Biological profiles is in process. In addition, we revised the international reports of the last two decades that analyze the use of biometrics. The primary focus of concern of these documents, from the ethical point of view, is the right to privacy of individuals, giving practical guidance and discussion regarding the elements necessary for the application of these novel technologies in an appropriate ethically manner. Finally, we contextualize from a brief analysis of biopolitics the role of biometrics and the basic ethical requirements for its development in that framework.

ABSTRACT

@#With the advances in cataract phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation, more and more attention has been paid to the postoperative effects by both clinicians and patients. Meanwhile, the instruments for the preoperative measurements are also evolving. Various types of ocular biometers have emerged, which have evolved the principles from ultrasound to swept-source optical coherence tomography(SS-OCT). The OA-2000, a new type of SS-OCT based ocular biometer with fully automatic three-dimensional scanning, has the advantages of simple and safe operation, high resolution, excellent repeatability, fast measurement and good tissue penetration. It can obtain multiple ocular biological parameters in one measurement, which enables a wide application prospect. Here, we review the measurement principle and clinical application of OA-2000.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY Introduction: The adult hemogram values can vary according factors such as ethnic origin, age, sex and level above the sea, whereby it is essential to know the biological intervals associated to our own population. Therefore, the objective of our study was to determine biological reference intervals (BRI) for adults with the hematological equipment BC-5000. Methods: This is a transversal descriptive study with 111 blood bank donors from Medellín, between 18 62 years old. Hemogram, Creactive protein and ferritin were done. The BRI were calculated according to the recommendations of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC), with the formula X ± (DS * 1, 96). BRI comparison according sex was carried out with the t-student test. Results: Calculated BRI by X ± (DS * 1, 96) formula, showed statistically significant differences (P < 0, 05) between men and women for count in most of the parameters. Higher statistical means were obtain in women for the count of leukocytes and platelets, absolute counts of some white cells, VPN y PCT. Discussion: The presence of androgens in the male sex, inductors of the erythropoiesis system, as well as the estrogens and menstrual period, suppressor of this system, can explain the lower values in the female erythrocyte count, the hemoglobin, hematocrit and red cell lower ranges. The high estrogen and interleukins 6 and 1 loads in women, drive the extended half-life of some cells like lymphocytes, that can explain the difference in leucocyte count found in the present study.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The cephalic circumference (CC) is a measurement that detects alterations in the proper growth of the brain. CC curves most used worldwide are those proposed by the CDC, NCHS and WHO. Despite criticism of the methodology used to create them, updates have been made to correct inconsistencies, and that has helped to detect and treat on time problems of cranial size at both the small (microcephaly) and large (macrocephaly) ends. Several authors have suggested that regional reference curves should be made, and others, like Kenton Holden and colleagues, have proposed new curves that consolidate different databases, aiming to reduce the risk of errors in the diagnosis of microcephaly or mild macrocephaly. It is necessary to study what the normal cranial growth pattern of Latin American children is for each region or country, as well as to determine the interethnic differences.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Myopia is a form of refractive error whichis a leading cause of visual disability throughout the world. The purpose of this study was to determine the variations inocular biometric parameters in various degrees of myopia i.e.low myopia (<-3D), moderate myopia (-3D to -6D) and highmyopia (>-6D).Method and Materials: 200 eyes of 100 myopia patientswere examined. Keratometer and A-scan was done to measurethe corneal curvature and other biometric parameters like axiallength, anterior chamber depth, lens thickness and vitreousdepth respectively. Comparison of ocular components withage, gender and family history was done. One way ANOVAwas done to compare biometric parameters with refractivestates. Results: In our study, axial length(AL) (P=0.001), axial lengthto corneal curvature ratio(AL:CRC) (P=<0.001), anteriorchamber depth(ACD) (P=<0.001) and vitreous depth(VD)(P=<0.001) were statically significant as compared to cornealcurvature(CC) (P=0.56) and lens thickness (P=0.64) whichwere statically insignificant. Conclusion: AL:CRC and AL had more effect on highmyopia group as compared to corneal curvature. AL:CRCratio was a better index for categorizing the refractive statusof an individual as compared to axial length alone. This ratiocan be considered at a cutoff point to categorise myopia intodegenerative myopia.

ABSTRACT

Objective To compare the agreement of central vault measurements between anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) in the eyes with posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens implantation and analyze the association sculus to sculus (STS) diameter and white-to-white (WTW) diameter of cornea with central vault. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out.Medical records of 150 phakic eyes of 75 myopic patients who underwent implantable collamer lens (ICL) surgery for the correction of myopia were collected in Chongqing Aier Eye Hospital from December 2017 to March 2018.The postoperative central vault were measured with AS-OCT and UBM.Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman plot were used to evaluate the repeatability and agreement of the measurements between two devices. The affecting factors of central vault measurements were assessed. Results Mean central vault in the 150 phakic eyes after ICL surgery was (0.73±0.25)mm by AS-OCT and (0.76-±0.31)mm by UBM,respectively with the ICC of 0.91 for the measurements of AS-OCT and UBM.Bland-Altman analysis showed that the 95% limits of agreement of central vault measurements were-0.38-0.31 mm between the two devices.Five values were beyond the 95% consistency interval, and the maximum absolute value of the difference was is 0.31 mm,which was beyond the clinical acceptable range, showing an non-interchangeable difference in the central vault measurements between the devices in ICL implanted eyes.WTW was a affecting factor for vault with a regression equation of Y=0.145 3X-0.960 1 (t =2.272,P<0.05).Horizontal and vertical STS were the indirect affecting factors for vault by the association with WTW with the regression equation of Y=0.524 1X+5.362 4 and Y=0.613 4X+4.658 3,respectively.Conclusions Central vault measured by UBM is higher that than AS-OCT after ICL surgery, and the measurements are uninterchangeable between the two devices.Accurate measurement of STS distance is essential for the selection of appropriate lens before operation.

ABSTRACT

We propose a novel palm-vein recognition model based on the end-to-end convolutional neural network. In this model, the convolutional layer and the pooling layer were alternately connected to extract the image features, and the categorical attribute was estimated simultaneously via the neural network classifier. The classification error was minimized via the mini-batch stochastic gradient descent algorithm with momentum to optimize the feature descriptor along with the direction of the gradient descent. Four strategies including data augmentation, batch normalization, dropout, and L2 parameter regularization were applied in the model to reduce the generalization error. The experimental results showed that for classifying 500 subjects form PolyU database and a self-established database, this model achieved identification rates of 99.90% and 98.05%, respectively, with an identification time for a single sample less than 9 ms. The proposed approach, as compared with the traditional method, could improve the accuracy of palm vein recognition in clincal applications and provides a new approach to palm vein recognition.
